Style.
Style is one of the biggest things you should consider when looking for a photographer. Whether it’s for your senior session or elopement, you want to find a style that you vibe with and makes you feel at home (I know that sounds cheesy but it’s true). The best way to get a feel for the overall style of a photographer is by checking their Instagram. This is where they have curated their feed to show you the work they want to, in the order, they find most aesthetically pleasing.
But here’s the stuff to really think about, just because their feed looks nice, think about how their editing would like for your photos. Look at skin tone and the colors of the background. If their photos are super light and airy because all of their photos have a white background, consider what that would look like on the photos that you want in a forest full of greenery.
Below is an example using my own feed, on the left is what my style and colors looked like in the summer of 2021, and on the right is my editing style from early 2022. Check their most recent work for what you can expect your photos to look like.
Like I said earlier, a photographer’s Instagram is a curated version of their work, like most people on Instagram. To get an even more in-depth feel for their editing variety, check out their website, look for where it either says “gallery” or “blog” and that’s where you’ll see their full edited sessions!
Reaching Out.
When you reach out, here are things to ask for:
-
Their availability, making sure they are available the days you’re interested in is a given, but also seeing how well they work with you and are willing to accommodate you if your dates conflict
-
Ask them about retouching
-
See what their cancellation policy is like or rescheduling due to things like COVID or bad weather
-
If they have payment plans, can you get a customizable pricing package, how much the deposit is
